If you are a mother, Mother’s Day should be the one day a year that you get to be looked after, pampered and waited on hand and foot, although if you are a mother, you’ll know that this rarely happens, not in my household anyway.
My daughter is now old enough to earn her own pocket money. She has a GoHenry account which is proving to be invaluable in incentivising her to work hard to save up and buy the things she ‘desperately needs’. It is, however interesting that when she’s not saving up to buy something she wants, she’s actually not that motivated at all. More about GoHenry later because it deserves a plug.
So, having navigated the prep school years of a bunch of daffs and a homemade card I now have my sights set somewhat higher in terms of offerings from my daughter.
Last week whilst she was shopping with friends, she text me a picture of a rather lovely pair of glasses from TX Maxx with the caption “£15.00 do you like?” Assuming they were for me, for Mother’s day, I readily agreed that they were lovely and said she should buy them. Imagine my disappointment when she came home wearing them!
So, knowing that I’m not getting a pair of sunglasses, what would I like? A question my daughter has been asking me all week because she’s clearly lacking in imagination this year.
Well, what I’d really, really like is a month at Como Shambala in Bali, but knowing that this is impossible on a £20-£30 budget, these are the things I’ll be guiding her towards.

Let’s hope she gets the message!
Being older, and wealthier than my daughter I always buy my mother something special for Mother’s day. This year I’ve bought her lovely things for the garden because being retired she spends a lot of time there. She’s also green fingered – unlike me – and can grow seeds from scratch so I’ve bought her traditional English countryside flowers like Sweepea’s which can be grown in a bucket. I have bought her a pink birdhouse too – what bird wouldn’t want to nest in a fuchsia pink cottage.
Back to GoHenry, if you have children (from the age of 8) and you want to teach them the value of money, then this really is something worth investing in. It’s basically a pre-paid Visa card in the child’s name which you can put money on, but more importantly you can set tasks for earning. It’s app based, you have a parent version, the child has a child friendly version and you can set spending and earning parameters at the touch of a button. I feel safe and secure knowing my daughter has this on her, particularly as she goes to school 10 miles away from home. Check it out.
Anyway to all the mother’s out there. Hope you get lots of love and pampering from your loved ones next Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day!
